Best of the Best: PMVs

So this morning I got bored and made a thread over on Bronies Australia containing the best PMVs I've seen, and reviews of them. I then realised that I could post that on here for the three of you who still check this site every so often. So get a coffee, sit back, and get ready to enjoy some of the best content this fandom has ever seen.

Equestrian Rhythm is hiring!

APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSED.

I got 7 applicants, one of which I've already selected. There will be at least one other new writer, possibly 2 or 3. Stay tuned.

Soggy_Doggy, Multifish, sonic30, Glitchhog, and pretty much everypony who has ever contributed to this site are inactive. Now, I can post stuff, but I can't run this entire site on my own. At the moment I need a few positions specifically:

PMVs: We need somepony to do the monthly top 8 PMV lists.
Graphics and Design: Soggy used to make the banners for this site. Anypony good with digital art (creating it or just slapping some vectors on an image with text) would be hugely helpful here.
Occasional posting: Do you like music? Awesome. That's all you need. You can post a review, or random spotlight, or news, pretty much anything you want. No schedule, no obligations, just help out where you can.

So yeah, for those of you who'd like to contribute, just shoot me an email at s_lamerichs@hotmail.com with the title "EqR Application". Just say what you'd like to do, and add a bit of spiel if you want. And don't worry about "not being good enough", chances are if you apply to do occasional posting, you'll get it. Extra hooves never hurt anypony.

Review #24: Evdog - I Don't Hate You

You may remember Evdog as the musician who headed last week's Top 7. He's also the exact reason why that Top 7 was over 24 hours late. I accidentally opened this song instead of Diamondheart from his YouTube channel, and got trapped for the best part of a day bobbing along to the captivatingly upbeat and bubbly tune, completely lost in Evan's beautifully warm and soothing voice. Pretty much everything in this song was absolutely perfect. The simplicity of the chord progression, the twang of the acoustic guitar, the absolutely pitch-perfect dual-layered vocals, the way that the vocal range was kept simple enough for even someone who can't carry a tune in a bucket (like me) to sing along to, and, my favourite part, the final acapella chorus. ACAPELLAS ARE NOT MEANT TO SOUND THAT GOOD!

The song is written about Pinkie Pie from the perspective of "her best friend or lover". Personally, I interpret it as the latter. The lyrics actually threw me off a bit at first, because they're kind of... well, dumping Pinkie. Yet it's one of the most bubbly, upbeat, happy songs I've heard in a long, long time. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that this actually made a lot of sense. The singer is saying that he'd still like to stay friends with Pinkie, which would prevent the onset of Pinkamena Diane Pie, and really, this kind of happy tune is something Pinkie would absolutely love, far more than a sad, sombre piece of work about the same subject. You may say I'm looking too deep into this, but hey, it's my job.

I pay a lot of attention to lyrics in music. I'm a sucker for vocal songs, and if you listen to what they're saying, rather than what they sound like, you'll notice a lot more than you ever would have otherwise. For instance, a lot of people wouldn't have noticed that TeiThePony's Love Me Cheerilee remix has a very clever sex joke hidden in the glitchy vocals (at around 0:35) if it wasn't pointed out in the comments. Similarly, I've yet to see a single other person make the correlation between the lyrics in Magic by The Living Tombstone and Tomb's own music ("It's all the same thing [...] We've seen before"; "Why do you still want to perform? We tried to tell you all along That this act is old"). There's a surprising amount of subliminal (or not-so-subliminal) messages in the lyrics of brony music that are completely missed unless you're paying close attention. But that's the thing with I Don't Hate You. It's superliminal. It says "You're just too crazy for me" four times, and "you're way more than I can handle" and "stop messin' with my head" six times each. Yet despite this incessant repetition of what would normally be significantly negative statements, you're completely submerged in happiness and the feel-good nature of the rhythm for the entire 5 minutes and 48 seconds you're listening, and the rest of the day afterwards, too. Likely because, if you're anything like me, you won't be able to stop yourself from listening to it over and over for the rest of the day.

But I'm just one pony. Let's get every single other comment about this song I could find on the internet.

"I adore I Don't Hate You, just simply adore how catchy it is"
"Not Quite Angels is amazing, but I Don't Hate You just floored me."
"Love that song =D"
"Congrats on the well-deserved EqD spot!"
"I'm definitely going to have to cover this song sometime"
"I love the outro, it's such a simple melody that I bet a bunch of drunk guys in a bar or a questionably-talented groom at his reception could belt it out without a care in the world. Why? Because this a feel-good track, and everypony is too busy feeling awesome to acknowledge that the stallions are slurring or the groom is off-key, because all that matters is that ponies are having fun!"
"Love the vocals =D"
"I'm crying right now :'D"
"wonderful song :D"
"This is fantastic! Great job."
"This is awesome"

"I can say that this is now one of my favourite brony songs. You have a great voice and the whole song has a vibe I hadn't felt in this fandom. We need more music like this."
"This is incredible!"

I think that speaks for itself, don't you?

♫I don't hate you. I really don't.
It's just you're way more than I can handle.
How can I show you, you can make it easier on me
Please stop messin' with my head...♫

Weekly(ish) Top 7 #25

Well, now that my internet appears to be somewhat stable (if horrendously slow) I can get content up for you! I have a few posts queued across the next week that are already completed typed up, so even if I enter a coma, you're not going to miss out! But for now, this week's Top 7, I've decided to do something a bit alternative to our generic 7 dubstep songs, check it out after the break!

Delays

Moved house on Saturday, ISP said the internet was working on the previous Tuesday. Well, it wasn't, and we won't be getting an internet connection until Thursday at the earliest. Have had to hijack a phone wi-fi hotspot to post this, which doesn't have enough data to let me actually do the top 7. Can't find any WEP networks I can hack into in this town, so don't expect anything until Thursday. Again, sorry.

Weekly Top 7 #24: I hope I have the number right edition

Wow, I'm really bad at this updating on schedule thing, aren't I? Well, better late than never, I suppose. Check the top 7 out after the break!

Status Update on the site

I think I'm the only one still here. Multifish and Glitchhog taking an indefinite break, and I haven't seen sonic30 or Soggy_Doggy for weeks. Now, as I am woefully unprepared for doing the Top 8 PMVs or Weekly Top 7s on a regular basis, that means that the recent ones likely aren't ever to come. I've been caught up recently with MLP Music Archive work, discussions with EQBeats and Everfree Radio, and a ton of Bronies Australia work, and added on top of all that, starting tonight, I'm meant to be moving house. However, come the 6th of August, I should have everything set up to start running this place properly, like it used to be. Top 7s, Top 8s, Alphabetical posts, and random spotlights are the four main things you should expect to see on a regular basis from then on. Hopefully I'll be able to get the B musician spotlight up before then, but with the whole moving 150km thing that can't be guaranteed. Thanks for sticking with us, though.

Wake Up, Applejack!

No, this doesn't mean I'm back to posting; I just really wanted to share this. Fantastic!
